Dental Cleanings Are Essential for Your Pet’s Health!
Just Like Us, Pets Need Dental Care
You brush your teeth every day — but what about your pet?
Just like humans, pets need dental care to stay healthy. In fact, dental disease is one of the most common and overlooked health issues in dogs and cats.
At Daniel Island Veterinary Hospital, we take your pet’s oral health seriously. Here’s why you should, too.
1. Dental Disease Is Painful — and Common
By age 3, most pets already show signs of periodontal disease.
Common symptoms include:
Bad breath
Yellow or brown teeth
Red, swollen gums
Drooling or dropping food
Untreated dental problems can cause chronic pain, tooth loss, and even infections.
2. Bacteria Can Spread to Organs
The same bacteria that causes gum disease can enter your pet’s bloodstream and damage their heart, kidneys, or liver. This makes dental care a matter of overall health, not just a cosmetic concern.
3. Professional Cleanings Do What Brushing Can’t
While brushing your pet’s teeth is helpful, it doesn’t replace a professional cleaning under anesthesia.
At Daniel Island Vet, our dental procedures include:
Full-mouth digital dental X-rays
Safe anesthesia and monitoring
Plaque and tartar removal above and below the gumline
Tooth extractions (if necessary)
We focus on safety and comfort at every step.
4. How Often Does My Pet Need a Dental Cleaning?
We recommend dental cleanings for most pets once a year, starting around age 2–3.
Some small dog breeds and senior pets may benefit from more frequent cleanings. We tailor the recommendation based on dental health during your pets examination.

At-Home Dental Care
We recommend routine at-home dental care for all of our patients. Regular brushing, dental chews, water additives, and dental diets are all great ways to control build-up of plaque and tartar on your pet's teeth. The dental products our doctors recommend can be purchased in our hospital or through our online pharmacy.
